Question for all you pumpers out there:
When your kiddo is going to be sitting for a long period of time (long car ride or movie), how much do you crank up the basal? Do you start when the movie begins or earlier?
Yesterday I increased Matthew's basal by 25% during the movie. I did not start the increase early. Clearly, it did not work.
Now, to be fair, it was pizza at a new place and my carb counting could have been off.
Thanks in advance! : )

Hey there - I crank up Grace +30% for when she is sitting for up to 3 hours. This seems to work for her. I start the increase about 45 minutes before the movie. For pizza, I dose for about 35 grams per slice, then increase basal by 50% for 2-3 hours for each slice she has. This is what works for Grace, it might be starting point for Matthew. I learned through some good advice, but mostly trial and error :0) Good luck!
Wish I could help you Tracy...no pumping yet for either of my girls but I can tell you this, we went on a very looooong road trip recently and the girls were not only eating on the road but also sitting for hours at a time. I had to up their insulin requirements by almost double!!! It was crazy, it scared me a bit, but it worked. If I didn't double the amount of insulin they received they were consistently in the high 300's and even some 400's...ouch :(
Good luck figuring this out, I know there are some really great d-mamas out there who have been there, done that, when it comes to pumping insulin :) I'm sure they are filled with some great advice.
(((hugs)))
Like Penny said, it's all trail an error. I have not done much basal increase for sitting ie watching a movie etc. Bekah is not super active. We haven't gone to watch a movie in the theater since we started pumping so that might make a difference and no long car rides yet either. As far as pizza goes I do 35-40g per slice (depending on size and if she is going to eat the crust on the end) and do a combo bolus(some pumps call dual wave) of 40% up front and 60% over 1.5 hrs. Sometimes it works like a champ but not always. Good luck! you'll get it figured out over time.
I've never done that! We did not have issues with a 5 hour car ride or movie. I think everything is trial and error and what works for you. Don't you wish there was a manual that told you exactly what to do?!
I don't adjust basal for sitting. There could be times that Caleb gets excited (like for a movie) but it's not consistent so I don't plan for it. I think given that you are embarking on pumping and there was a new pizza involved, it may make sense to note what happened and see if the pattern continues. It might be hard to pinpoint the cause of the high with so many variables in this case.
We're 50/50...sometimes she gets a little extra, other times not. I honestly have no idea what the method to my madness is -- it's just an unspoken algorithm in my brain...and its completely hit or miss!!!
