Pumping Update

It's been about 7 weeks since we starting pumping with Omnipod.

Matthew likes it a lot. He still hestiates at site changes because he's had a couple that have hurt, but for the most part, he likes it.

I'll be honest, though, the transition from shots to pumping has not been easy.

At our pump class, the CDE (a type 1 herself) said the first 3 months of pumping would be 3 times the work. She said things would probably get worse before getting better.

She was right.

But the past few days....and yes, I'm a little fearful to write this....things are finally...dare I say it......settling down.

I think I have basals set. Pretty darn close. (I am living and breathing Meri's 3-day-rule. Which, by the way, our CDE believes it as well!)

Carb ratios seems to be working.

And let me tell you....it's about time. A look back over the logbook shows me the dirty details of what we've been going through the last 7 weeks:

17 days with BGs over 250.

5 of those days, we saw BGs over 350.

16 days where Matthew had low BG. Oh how he hates going low.

But God has been good and the numbers are getting better.

Until the next growth spurt, right?

Geesh! Poor guy! And poor Mom! I hope it starts getting a little easier. And I hope that very soon you find that it's been worth it!

my son has been pumping for almost 2 years and he still gets crazy highs and some lows. The growth spurts and activity levels mean constant changes and wacky bgs. but boy it is so much easier to manage on a pump. Keep up the good work, you will feel more confident soon.

We use Omnipod too. I have not confessed yet to the D.O.C. that Zac took over pumping right away. I really have not learned to do it......shameful, I know. But he is wanted control right away and I never got to practice it. He is doing an excellent job so far. You do have to watch the occlusions with OmniPod. We've had nights where he gets two in a row, so as our educator says..."Don't switch and snooze." We always check two hours after switching to be sure the new one is working. A lot of lost sleep, unfortunately.

WOW, you are doing such a GREAT job and so is Matthew. It is hard work. I think many people think the pump just up and does all the work for you. Nothing could be further from the truth. Keep up the wonderful job that you are doing friend.

Enjoy these moments of serenity!

Our pump transition literally almost sent me into a corner to rock back and forth banging my head on the wall. It was 4 years ago...the Cozmo pump (which, btw, to this day **I LOVE** even though she doesn't wear it anymore).

Around the 8 week mark, I thought I might be getting the hang of it. By the 12 week mark, I was a little more confident, but, honestly, it was about 6 months before I felt like I could make that pump my.....slave :)
